WASHINGTON, DC – A newly published study in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences,[1][1] the official journal of the World Federation of Neurology,[2][2] links mercury from the Thimerosal in vaccines with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
This study represents six years worth of effort by independent researchers to gain access to hidden US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data in the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD). In 2003, the Government Reform Committee of the US House of Representatives asserted, "(a)ccess by independent researchers to the Vaccine Safety Datalink database is needed for independent replication and validation of CDC studies regarding exposure of infants to mercury-containing vaccines and autism."
Nonetheless, this new analysis of some of the data in the carefully guarded VSD database, documenting the mercury poisoning of a generation of American children, would never have been possible without the intervention of Congressional leaders, parent autism advocacy groups, and legal experts. Ironically, only a few independent researchers have gained even this limited level of restricted access to the VSD database, despite the fact that the VSD Project is funded by hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars.
The new study, led by Dr. Heather Young, Ph.D., a professor of epidemiology at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, examined the CDC-supplied medical vaccination records from the VSD of 278,624 children, born from 1990 through 1996.
This study calculated the average mercury exposure children incurred from routine childhood Thimerosal-containi ng vaccines, by year of birth, during their first year of life. After calculating average mercury exposure by year of birth, the study then estimated the prevalence rates of various medical diagnoses for children born in each of the years examined.
The prevalence rate of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders correlated with the average mercury exposure children received: increasing/decreasi ng levels of mercury exposure from routine childhood Thimerosal-containi ng vaccines resulted in corresponding trends in prevalence rates of these diagnoses. By contrast, medical outcomes presumed to be unrelated to mercury exposure did not correlate with the average levels of mercury exposure from routine childhood Thimerosal-containi ng vaccines.
Depending upon the specific neurodevelopmental disorder examined (autism, autism spectrum disorder, tics, emotional disturbance, attention deficit disorder-hyperactiv ity disorder, and developmental/ learning disorder), the observed overall risk of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders was significantly higher (about 2- to 6- fold) following an additional 100 micrograms of mercury exposure. For autism alone, the overall risk was about 2.5-fold higher following an additional 100 micrograms of mercury exposure.
These results demonstrate that the suspicions of those serving on the Government Reform Committee were correct: "…(t)o date, studies conducted or funded by the CDC that purportedly dispute any correlation between autism and vaccine injury have been of poor design, under-powered, and fatally flawed. The CDC's rush to support and promote such research is reflective of a philosophical conflict in looking fairly at emerging theories and clinical data related to adverse reactions from vaccinations."

Routine childhood vaccination should be continued to help reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with infectious diseases, but efforts should be undertaken to remove Hg from vaccines.
This study confirms what a lot of us have suspected for some time. It is encouraging to see the truth finally starting to come out. At the same time I am continually surprised and disappointed to see it proven that CDC and other governmental agencies have had this information for quite some time and not only did nothing with it - they did their best to cover it up. Shameful.
Regarding the first comment by Whyren:
Vaccines should be subject to the same guiding principle that all medicine has been founded upon, "First do no harm". If vaccines cannot be proven to be consistent with this guiding principle they should be stopped. If vaccines can be proven safe and effective they should be continued. The current system of approval and monitoring is broken. An independent body needs to be established to take those duties away from those currently responsible. Taking mercury out of vaccines and changing nothing else does not fix this problem. Unfortunately it only ensures that there will be similar problems in the future.
You know it's funny because I find the existing evidence for this connection to be quite strong, and have little doubt that such a connection exists and that specific populations of kids have a genetic profile that renders them vulnerable to developing neurodevelopmental disorders, and esecially autism, from thimerosal exposure, and more generally from environmental mercury exposure.
The problem I have with this study, at least as far as the description above goes, is that it calculates average exposures, and that it did not include later data, though that may be because the VSD doesn't contain later data (after 1996) Also would have liked to have data for the period immediately preceding, particularly 1980-1990.
The ideal database would span 1980-2006, and technically, can't be collected yet, because the later birth cohorts should be at least five years old in order to get the data for autism diagnosis rates (typically still diagnosed rarely before age three). I believe this data would show an steep upward slope change in the trend lines for rates of autism after 1987, and a gradual downward slope change after 2004, when the stockpiles of mercury-laced vaccines finally start to be replaced with thimerosal-free versions.
One of the many lies propagated by CDC, NIH, NIM, and their media lackeys, is that thimerosal was removed in 2001. Technically true, they uniformly omit mentioning that the several years of stockpiled neurotoxic vaccines were kept in circulation, distributed, and consumed, up into 2004.
Regarding the use of average exposures, that is one of the problems with epidemiological studies, which unlike laboratory experiments in animals, don't with certainty make a direct correlation between a specific exposure and specific outcome in each subject.
As a physician and one who uses and critically analyzes statistics on a daily basis, I would say the devil is in the details. The news exerpt is just enough to ruffle feathers but not enough to really have a person tease out the details. It sounds like the Avandia scare or the recent Vytorin controversy. Sensational headlines sell news but might not make good scientific sense.
I think I wait and reserve judgement until after I get more detailed info.
Yeah--I would like to see the original data. I could certainly run by the researchers I work with for their 2 cents.
If they want to know the truth have Rand do the study. I work with a Rand Fellow, and I promise--the results are the results.
The correct address of the article is:
http://www.pharmalot.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/thimerosal-vaccine-study.pdf
Check it out for yourself. It appears not to be from an original source. It appears to be a scanned version. It seems to have at least a generation loss from scanning.
Another source of the article can be found at Science Direct. The location of the abstract is:
I don't think they'll like the fact that someone has copied and scanned multiple times the article at the location in my previous comment, if it is not truly a saved version of the original.
Is it right that the MSM has not purchased the article and not made public the findings? No! However, since the article or abstract at the Internet location of my previous comment does not appear to be an original, then the content cannot be verified as being the actual content. I don't profess to be an adobe expert, but when I zoomed in on the article, the font never cleaned up like original PDF files I create for my business.
A better study that was done in monkeys and shows a connection between autistic behaviors and thimerosal is this one.
This one is interesting because it explores a potential biochemical pathway that is activated by thimerosal
There is no question about the existence of the connection for anyone who isn't either unable to see it due to an innate inability to think based on actual evidence (the syndrome of chimps who accept the 'findings' of the emperor's new clothes studies put out after looking at the serious faces of the researchers), or who is motivated not to see it due to conflicts of interest - being in the medical fields where they make a living by practicing status quo medicine, which originated from roots in quackery, has produced such wonders as thalidomide and countless other disasters, and is based on nothing but memorization of the latest 'studies' brought into doctor's offices by pharmaceutical sales reps.
Others refuse to see the obvious link because they are so vested in the truly miraculous public health benefits that vaccines have brought, and are unable to accept that part of the price has involved unethical cover-up of negligence in doing due-diligence regarding the effects of mercury (a deadly neurotoxin) as a preservative, the wholesale collusion between the biopharm/biomedical industry, health agencies, and media to continue to pretend that the emperor is clothed when it is clear to even a small child that it is a lie, which now even a former NIH director has suggested should be reexamined., not to mention the setup of special non-court court systems exclusively for vaccine trials, which enable government to funnel back-door hush money payments to families with the wherewithal to prosecute and force accountability for the neurological negligence and medical malfeasance that was practiced on entire generation of children.
All the while pretending to be reasonable. The banality of evil.
I'm just going to throw this out there--not so much commenting on the validity of the article one way or the other.
Do you know about Biomed central? Open access medical journals. Might not find what you need--but it is still a resource to use when you want to know what is going on in the literature.
http://www.biomedcentral.com/browse/journals/
You can also hit Pubmed--search google for pubmed and you will go right there.
There is also Google Scholar and another scientific search engine www.scirus.com
I always like to at least read the consensus of the abstracts if I can't get the full text to get a bigger picture of what is going on.
Forgive me if I sound patronizing, I don't mean too. I work in a medical research environment so its what we do. Not everyone has these skills. Just sharing.
njb are you asking me? Sorry can't quite tell!
If so I know pubmed, etc. I worked in biomedical research for nearly 10 years in both academia and industry.
Sorry if the reference is intended for someone else.
No I was not speaking to one person--my apologies if it sounded that way.
I was speaking in general. Many folks don't know.
We can disagree on topics--but I promise I never intend to be personally offensive.
I am fed up with all the cover up about what we parents of a children living with autism has went through, we were there and we are still here. The thought that money is the bigger issue here then our children is very disturbing. We the parent have the children as living prove of what being a genny pig can get you and we want anwers for our children future. The products in the vaccines trigger autism in our children. Our children immune system was not strong enough to fight the attack and now we have an overwhelming number of children diagnosed with autism, not because we are better education, because parents know their child, but because parents are coming out and demanding answers. One is crying wolf, this many is failure on the companies that took a cheat route, to save money and brought cheaper ingredients from overseas and now our children suffer.
My heart goes out to all the parents of Autistic children.
Someday in the future--we will truly understand the why's--but in the meantime, it does not ease the suffering of either parent or child.

Njb, did you ever stop to wonder why not only the Amish children who do not vaccinate, but also numerous other religious groups who do not vaccinate, have virtually non-existent rates of autism? Or why the incidence has gone up several hundredfold in the last 15-20 years, which by the admission of all, only a small fraction of the increase can be explained by diagnostic changes?
Unfortunately understanding why's will not ease either the pain on families nor the social and economic burden which has been created for both families and society.
Are you aware that a former head of the NIH has suggested that the VSD be re-examined to look for specific genetic subtypes which may be vulnerable to mercury-induced autism? This in an interview on CBS in the last month? That she admitted that the National Institutes of Medicine, upon seeing correlations which they were unable to suppress by manipulating the raw data in the VSD decided to make certain decisions about removing parts of the raw data AFTER the initial analyses were completed, in a selective manner that would have a university researcher kicked out to the curb for fraud if discovered?
I have posted links to this and other information on my column, you can access those at any time if you wish to verify the information that I'm stating here.
I have already posted numerous links to laboratory studies, whose results demonstrate dose-dependent behavioral effects of thimerosal on laboratory animals, these can't be swept under the carpet.
Mercury is a known neurotoxin. It is beyond medical malpractice to have injected it repeatedly into otherwise healthy infants and young children in order to save pharmaceutical companies a pittance of their profits. It is criminal of the CDC, NIH, and NIM to have manipulated data, put a gag-order on access to the data by research scientists for years, and engage in a media mudfest against all rational thinking observers who see the numbers of autistic children climbing in a near exponential fashion in a period of oh, 15 years, knowing full well that they'd never met such a huge number of children like these 15 years back, never mind 20-30 years ago.
Go ask the administrators at your local public school district whether the numbers are due to better diagnostics. They are pulling their hair out wondering what to do with this tsunami of autistic children.
I was just offering my sincere sympathies to the parents and children.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist by nature--a real conspiracy would require a room full of multi-Ph'd'ed folks to actually plan and agree on something. Not likely. They would argue their points until everyone in the room was a skeleton. My current CEO is a former NIH division chief--they can drive you batty by the inability to decide on anything.
The problem I see is two fold--a. quality of the prior research, b. political will for funding further research.
From everything I've read--if there is a relationship--it seems to be a genotype expression--some kids just can't handle it-in laymen terms. The real research needs to be focused on a couple areas--mercury free vaccines that work and/or b. the genotype combination which causes susceptibility.
I can see you are passionate about this topic Sem01--but the Amish are a bad example--they have serious problems of their own--from the closed gene pool--I only mention this because statistically they just can't be compared to the general population.
Still my heart goes out to all the children and parents. Their burden is a heavy one indeed.

Correct.
The reason I mention other populations is in consideration of possible genetic homogeneity among the Amish. There are other unvaccinated populations that are not genetically related, though they may share a religion. The same rarity of autism is present in these populations. That is why I mention other populations in addition to the Amish. It is in my previous comment that I am not only referring to the Amish.
I don't understand how we have skyrocketing rates of autism still if we have taken the thimerosal out of vaccines, if this is the causing factor.
My nephew has autism, and was born in 2004. The only mercury he has had has been in flu shots, and the child dose of those only has .3 micrograms each. He showed signs of autism very young, before he got his first flu shot anyway.

I think you also have to consider the maternal mercury burden. Not only did I receive numerous regular vaccines (I traveled all over the world), but I was given a number of vaccines while I was pregnant: flu shots, tetanus, shots because my blood was O- and my husbands A+. I've been told all of these contained mercury. As others have noted, there was still Hg in some childhood immunizations after 2004.
First thing, mercury/thimerosal has NOT been completely removed from all vaccines. Your child is still getting a trace amount large enough to contaminate a glass of water. I also believe in the maternal burden. If your child is born with a weakened immune system, something you will not know upon birth, and they are continuously injected with vaccines, you will see a decline or regression in them as they grow. That's why some people say their children are different from birth. I believe it all starts in the womb. That's another reason why children who are never vaccinated can have autism.

This is correct as evidenced by the recommendations for pregnant women to limit their consumption of fish due to fears of neurodevelopmental delays caused by mercury contamination.
But of course it's just fine to inject 40% mercury by weight thimerosal straight in to the same mothers' bloodstreams...
Sickening.
